Dangerous goods, or DG, are cargo classified as hazardous that require special handling, storage and transport. Each shipment is accompanied by an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet), also known as an SDS (Safety Data Sheet), detailing the substance's hazards, safe handling practices and emergency procedures. Additionally, there is a UN number — a four-digit code that identifies the specific hazardous material.
At IBEX, we have a team that is IMDG certified with sound knowledge of handling dangerous goods as per the IMDG Code, in addition to IBEX regulations (IBEX P&R House Rule). We do our best to safely transport dangerous goods, taking into consideration not only the cargo conditions but also the vessels, the ports and the marine environment.

Definitions

Contracting Parties & Warranty
The contract is between Carrier and Merchant; all Merchants are jointly and severally liable for obligations including freight payment.
Carrier's Tariff
The Carrier's tariff is incorporated and includes charges such as demurrage, detention, storage and legal costs.
Subcontracting & Indemnity
The Carrier may subcontract any part of the carriage; the Merchant agrees to indemnify the Carrier against claims.
Carrier's Responsibility

Transporting unconventionally shaped machinery and oversized construction equipment requires strict adherence to Verified Gross Mass (VGM) regulations to ensure maritime safety.
VGM is the total weight of a packed container, calculated as:
VGM = (Cargo Weight + Packing Materials / Dunnage / Bracing) + Container Tare Weight
Per IMO SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) regulations, the shipper is responsible for providing the VGM to the ocean carrier and terminal representative before the container can be loaded.
Shippers must use one of two methods to verify mass, using equipment that meets the accuracy standards of the state where weighing occurs:
Method 1 — Weighing the Packed Container The container is weighed after it is fully packed and sealed. Often done using a certified weighbridge or lifting equipment at port terminals or external facilities. If a truck is used, its weight and fuel must be subtracted from the total to isolate the container's VGM.
Method 2 — Summing Individual Weights Sum the weight of all cargo items, primary and secondary packaging, pallets, dunnage and securing materials. Add this to the container's tare weight, typically found on the CSC Plate on the container door. May be impractical for bulk commodities like scrap or grain and may require permission from local authorities.
Accuracy: Estimating weights is prohibited; all equipment must be calibrated and certified.Submission: Shippers should submit VGM through our portal.Consequences: Failure to provide VGM by the cut-off results in the container being denied loading, plus potential fines and storage fees.
